“I recommend these exhibits as one of the best educational resources available on diversity themes.”

DIVERSITY EXHIBITS FOR YOUR COMMUNITY
Family Diversity Projects is a national nonprofit devoted to helping eliminate prejudice, stereotyping, bullying, harassment, and discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender, gender identity, race, national origin, religion, and disabilities of all kinds. We tell stories of real people presented in eight award-winning, traveling photo-text exhibits: Authentic Selves, Building Bridges, In Our Family, Love Makes a Family, Nothing to Hide, Of Many Colors, Road to Freedom, and We Have Faith.
These exhibits tour communities nationwide and can be hosted in schools (K-12), colleges, universities, houses of worship, libraries, workplaces, museums, corporate headquarters, conferences, community gatherings, and many more venues.
A TRAVELING EXHIBIT AND COMPANION BOOK
AUTHENTIC SELVES: Celebrating Trans and Nonbinary People and Their Families
AUTHENTIC SELVES is groundbreaking in its depictions of joy and community. With stunning photographs and first-person interviews, it celebrates trans and nonbinary people alongside their partners, parents, children, siblings, and chosen family members – showing not only the challenges they face, but the rich, full lives they lead.
An illuminating volume of interviews and portraits from Skinner House Books, in collaboration with Family Diversity Projects, PFLAG National, and the Transgender Legal Defense & Education Fund. Foreword by Jazz Jennings, and Jeanette Jennings. Preface by Brian Bond, Chief Executive Officer, PFLAG National.
Delaware's Sarah McBride, featured in Authentic Selves, is the first openly trans member of the U.S. Congress. Her story proves what's possible when we replace fear with understanding. Rep. McBride reminds us that:
“Each of us has a deep and profound desire to be seen, to be acknowledged, and to be respected in our totality.”
Host An Exhibit
Hosting is a simple and powerful way to deepen empathy and compassion in your community. Several exhibits are accompanied by published books and free K–12 curriculum.
Benefits of Hosting
At a time when censorship and division are spreading, these exhibits serve as essential tools for dialogue, inclusion, and education. Hosting one is simple, but the impact is lasting, and showcases the belief that every single person deserves dignity and respect.
Host In Your Space
Each exhibit comes with approximately 16-20 framed photographs and interview texts that can be hung on walls or portable room dividers, or displayed on tables or floor easels. Read our display FAQ for details or reach out with specific questions.
Praise For The Exhibits
“At a time when dehumanization of people because of their gender identities is all too common, the Authentic Selves: Celebrating Trans and Nonbinary People and their Families exhibit provides a deeply humanizing antidote. It is impossible to view Authentic Selves, or any of Family Diversity Projects' traveling exhibits, without feeling connected to the people in it. The photos are beautiful and the narratives are compelling, poignant, sometimes funny, and often challenging - in other words, human. The exhibit opens conversations in a way that respects and celebrates our trans and nonbinary students, faculty, and staff and helps us create a safe and inclusive community.”

“I have been honored to be on the Advisory Board of Family Diversity Projects for many years. Given the important contribution Family Diversity Projects’ exhibits and books have had over 25 years in schools, colleges, and communities, I recommend Family Diversity Projects’ exhibits and books to teachers, professors, and administrators as among the best educational resources available on diversity themes.”
— Sonia Nieto, Ph.D, Author of Affirming Diversity, Professor Emerita, Language, Literacy, and Culture, University of Massachusetts

“I met with our student committee and was not prepared for the level of insight and rich dialogue given the ages of the students (9-11 years)! It was one of the most impactful conversations I've ever had with students, where an organic and authentic discussion delved into family structures, identity, bias, and stereotypes. We set up the photographs and interviews in a prominent public space in our building, and our next steps are to have classroom teachers introduce the online exhibit to focus on specific topics inside the classroom. The students will be able to go through activities of comparing/contrasting and exploring bias in small group discussions.”
— Amanda Mathiesen, Principal, Hosack Elementary School, Allison Park, PA

PLEASE GIVE
You can be a part of Family Diversity Projects' pivotal moment.
Our heated political climate has shown how fragile democracy can be and hateful rhetoric has caused even more urgency for education, like ours, that celebrates diversity. At this critical moment in history, we are redoubling our efforts to get exhibits into venues nationwide.
